Between 1997 and 1998 IT in Vietnam
made considerable steps forward in spite of the adverse effects
of the economic crisis in the region and a national economic growth
rate that has slowed down.
Simply by looking at the readership of PC World VN, we have an
initial picture of the numbers of people interested in IT in Vietnam.
In November 1997 when PC World VN celebrated its 5-year anniversary,
it had a circulation of 26'000. By June 1998. after only 7 months,
its circulation had reached 32'000. So, on average, every month
there are 900 more readers added to the IT community through PC
World VN, with an estimated growth rate of around 40% per year.
Surveys from IDC Singapore and IDC Thailand show a similar picture
with the growth rate of Vietnam's IT market calculated at around
30% per year and a 40% increase in people interested in IT. Over
the next few years, these figures may decrease. In other words
tie growth rate might slow down. Nevertheless, even the most cautious
forecasts say that between now and the year 2005, the average
growth rate of the IT market in Vietnam will not be less than
20% per year.
What are the reasons for such a growth rare and what is the evidence
of it?
Generally countries with emerging IT markets often have very high
growth rates. It is also reasonable to argue that accepting IT
and all that it entails usually results in an unrestricted growth
rate in IT. In the late 80s and early 90s Vietnam's IT growth
rate reached heights of more than 100%. Now, after 7-8 years,
Vietnam's growth has slowed down to a more normal rate of around
30%, which is still quite high and, consequently, Vietnam exemplifies
an emerging market with a developing IT market. But we must not
forget all of the factors within the IT market in Vietnam that
have had a significant affect on the market. |
